Hey there! I hope you have had a fruitful week.
Last time on ANCHORED, we talked about what to do when you genuinely have no idea what God is calling you to do. What the Bible says about purpose and calling. Why God gives us a lamp not a floodlight. And what to do when you are still waiting for clarity.
If you missed it, you can check your email or click here to read it.
Have you ever been completely surprised by someone?
Someone who seemed kind, trustworthy and full of integrity. Someone people looked up to. Then one day you discovered they had been living a completely different life when nobody was watching. And when that story came out, everyone asked the same question.
How did nobody know?
The answer is simple. Because there is always a part of us that no one ever sees. The thoughts we entertain. The habits we have managed to keep hidden. The things we do when nobody is watching.
Every one of us has a private life. And while the world focuses on what we do in public, God has always been far more interested in who we are behind closed doors.
God sees what people cannot
One of the most fascinating moments in the Bible happens when God sends the prophet Samuel to anoint the next king of Israel.
Samuel arrives at Jesse's house and immediately notices Eliab, David's oldest brother. He looked like a king. Tall, strong and impressive. Samuel thought to himself, surely this is the one.
But God stopped him.
1 Samuel 16:7 says: "People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."
People can see confidence. God sees pride. People can see kindness. God sees the motive behind it. People can see someone lifting their hands in worship on Sunday. God sees who they truly are when the church service ends.
The world judges us by what everyone can see. God lovingly looks deeper than that. And that should change the way we think about our faith. Because Christianity has never been about outward appearances.
Private compromise never stays private
David's private life prepared him to become king. But years later, it almost destroyed him.
One evening, from the roof of his palace, David saw Bathsheba. I wonder if David realised how that one small, private decision would change the course of so many lives. And like him, most of us never do. He kept looking. He sent someone to find out who she was. He invited her to the palace. And when she became pregnant, he tried to hide it. When that failed, he arranged for her husband to be killed.
It all happened behind closed doors. Or at least, David thought it did.
Until the prophet Nathan stood before him and said, you are the man.
The sin David thought nobody knew about was never hidden from God.
Most lives do not fall apart in one day. They drift in moments. One compromise. One hidden habit. One secret nobody else knows about. The things we repeatedly allow in private eventually shape the life we live in public. That is why what happens behind closed doors matters more than most of us realize.
When you stop hiding
The most beautiful part of David's story is not the sin. It is what happened after.
When Nathan confronted him, David did not make excuses. He did not blame anyone else. He did not become defensive. After all, he was the king. Instead he prayed a really honest prayer.
Psalm 51:10 says: "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."
Create in me a pure heart. That is where real change begins. Not by becoming better at hiding. By inviting God into the places we have spent so long trying to keep hidden.
There may be things in your life that nobody else knows about. A habit. A resentment. A thought pattern you keep returning to. God already knows. And He wants to heal them.

What to do if this is you
Ask God to search your heart. David prayed, "Search me, O God, and know my heart" (Psalm 139:23). Most of us ask God to change our circumstances. David asked God to change him. Spend a few quiet minutes this week asking “Lord, is there anything in my heart that should not be there?” Then be willing to listen.
Do not ignore the small compromises. Very few people wake up one morning and decide to ruin their lives. It usually happens much more slowly. A conversation that goes too far. Content you know you should not be watching. Bitterness you keep feeding instead of forgiving. The little things matter because little things don’t always stay little. Deal with them while they are still small.
Become the same person everywhere. The greatest compliment anyone could give you is this. The person they are in public is the same person they are in private. Not because you are perfect. Because you are genuine. When there is no gap between who everyone sees and who God sees, something in you becomes free. Because you can be yourself anytime.
One last thing
When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden, they hid. That is what shame has always made people do. Hide. Cover up. Pretend.
But God came looking for them.
Not because He did not know where they were. He already knew. He came because He wanted them to come out of hiding.
Whatever is behind your closed doors, God already sees it. The thoughts you battle with. The habits you are ashamed of. The failures you hope nobody ever discovers. None of them are new to Him. And yet He still comes looking for you.
Not to condemn you. Not to embarrass you. But to set you free.
The greatest freedom is not found in becoming better at hiding. It is found in discovering that you are fully known, fully loved, and that God is still willing to transform the parts of your life that nobody else can see.
Romans 8:1 says: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."
You are not condemned.
Come out of hiding.
