Hey there! I hope you are having a pleasant week.

Last time on ANCHORED, we explored one of the most important questions every Christian should ask themselves: Who am I when nobody is watching? We looked at why God cares so deeply about our private lives and how real change begins when we stop hiding.

If you missed it, you can check your email or click here to read it.

We need your support!

Anchored will always be completely free for everyone. That is never changing.

But if these teachings have encouraged you, challenged you, given you clarity, or helped you grow closer to God, there is now a simple way to support this ministry and help keep it going.

For just $3 a month (with 50% off your first month), you can become an Anchored Member. As a thank you, I'll also be sharing exclusive member resources with you.

Every week, someone finds an Anchored teaching while searching for hope, answers, or encouragement. Your support helps make all of this possible, from writing these teachings to keeping them free and available for everyone who needs them.

If you'd rather make a one-off contribution, you can do that here: Support Anchored here God bless you. ❤️

Have you ever wondered how you are supposed to know whether something you feel or hear is the Holy Spirit leading you or just your own thoughts?

If you have been a Christian for any length of time, you have probably asked that question. Maybe someone told you the Holy Spirit led them to do something and you wondered what that actually feels like. Is it a voice? A feeling? A strong impression? Or something else entirely?

We can make being Spirit-led sound mysterious, as though it is something only a few spiritually strong Christians ever experience. But that is not the picture the Bible gives us. The Holy Spirit was not given to a select few. He was given to everyone who belongs to Christ.

So the question is not whether the Holy Spirit wants to lead you. The question is whether you understand how He usually does it.

He will never lead you away from God's Word

The first place to begin is surprisingly simple. The Holy Spirit will never lead you to do something that goes against the Bible. After all, He is the One who inspired it.

So if a thought is encouraging you to hold onto bitterness when Scripture calls you to forgive, it is not the Holy Spirit. If it is telling you to be dishonest because it is only a small lie, it is not the Holy Spirit. If it is leading you towards temptation instead of away from it, it is not the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes we are asking God questions He has already answered. We pray, Lord should I forgive them, while quietly holding onto resentment. We ask whether we should apologise when we already know we were the one in the wrong. We ask whether we should tell the truth when honesty might cost us something.

Many of the questions we bring to God are not really about knowing His will. They are about finding the courage to obey it.

The Holy Spirit does not only reveal new direction. Very often, He gives us the strength to obey the direction God has already made clear in His word.

He changes you before He changes your direction

When most of us pray for God's leading, we are thinking about decisions.

Should I take this job?
Should I move?
Should I marry this person?

Those are important questions. But when Paul writes about the Holy Spirit, he talks about character.

Galatians 5:22-23 says: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."

That list has always challenged me, because none of the fruits feel spectacular. Nobody celebrates the moment you choose patience instead of anger. Nobody praises you when you forgive someone who hurt you. Nobody applauds the decision to tell the truth when a lie would have been easier.

Yet those simple moments are often where the Holy Spirit is doing His deepest work. Before He changes where you are going, He changes who you are becoming.

The clearest evidence that the Holy Spirit is leading your life is not always that you know what to do tomorrow. It is that today, little by little, you are becoming more like Jesus.

He often leads through quiet conviction

Many people expect the Holy Spirit's leading to feel dramatic or extraordinary. Sometimes it is. But very often, it is not.

Sometimes it is the quiet conviction that tells you not to send that angry message. The gentle reminder to encourage a friend who suddenly comes to mind. The uncomfortable feeling after you have spoken harshly and you know you need to apologise. The nudge to help someone even when it inconveniences you. The verse that surfaces in your mind whenever fear wants to take over.

Those are some of the evidences that the Holy Spirit is actively at work in you.

And notice where He always points. Towards love instead of hatred. Towards truth instead of compromise. Towards humility instead of pride. Towards forgiveness instead of resentment. His leading never produces confusion about who God is. It produces a growing desire to become more like Christ.

How to become more sensitive to His voice

Read God's Word consistently. The more familiar you become with Scripture, the easier it becomes to recognise when something reflects God's heart and when it does not.

Respond quickly when He convicts you. The longer you ignore conviction, the easier it becomes to ignore His voice the next time.

Pray for a willing heart, not just clear direction. Instead of only asking Lord what do you want me to do, try praying Lord, help me want what you want.

Seek wise, godly counsel. God often confirms His direction through mature believers who know His Word and genuinely care about you.

Be patient. Not every answer comes immediately. Sometimes God gives you just enough light for the next step, and then shows you the one after that as you keep walking.

One last thing

Jesus said something that has always brought me great comfort.

John 10:27 says: "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me."

Think about someone you are close to. You recognise their voice the moment they speak because you have spent time with them.

The same is true with God. The more time you spend with Him, the more familiar His voice becomes. Because your heart becomes more familiar with the Shepherd.

And perhaps that is what being Spirit-led has always been about. Not chasing extraordinary experiences. But walking so closely with Jesus that, over time, you begin to recognise the gentle voice of the One who has been leading you all along.
